Confucius said "A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step" My journey began in September 1968 when I joined American Bag & Paper Company at the Philadelphia plant. I started as a general mill employee at a starting wage of $2.17 per hour. On January 3, 2014 my journey ends when I retire from American Packaging Corp after more than 45 years. During those years I spent about 11 years as an hourly employee at the Philly plant and about 10 years in management including supervisor, department manager and production manager. In 1989 I went into the corporate field service position which I have spent 24 years. Each of the three phases of my career at APC has been extremely rewarding but by far the time spent in the field technical service group has been the most rewarding, fun and challenging. I have dealt with the full spectrum of folks from machine operators to presidents and owners of companies. It is a big responsibility since you are representing APC and must do so in the best fashion possible at all times.
Over the years I have worked with so many wonderful people at our plants and amongst our customers. Many of those folks have become close friends and will stay so as I retire. I am extremely grateful to have worked for a first class company and for the opportunities I have received and the support I have been given.
APC will always be a part of me and I am happy that it is. How can you just walk away and forget about something that has been a big part of your life for over 45 years?
I wish you all much success, happiness and good health……
Lou Heller, Retiree
